Once upon a time there was a bread-maker named Toni. One fine day, Toni fell madly in love with a certain peasant girl named Lucia. Lucia went to town every morning to sell eggs. Toni, every morning, awaited Lucia’s arrival with longing and enthusiasm, and then, when he saw her, so strong were the feelings that he felt for this young country girl that he never knew what to say and he remained dumbstruck. So many loving glances exchanged, so many sighs, and so many broken eggs, just because this poor devil was unable to express his love. Finally, Toni had a brilliant idea: he decided to prepare a dessert for his adored Lucia, not just any dessert, but a special dessert never made before!

So, Toni prepared a dessert made with eggs, butter, and candied fruit in a fragrant spongy dough. But Toni, so excited by the intense love he felt for Lucia and so involved in all the work of this gift, accidentally put a large amount of yeast into the dough without realizing it. The result? … a sweet bread: high, high, high just because of too much leavening. But “not all bad leads to harm.” Toni’s mistake led to the discovery of a really tasty dessert. In fact, when he presented his pandolce to Lucia, a miracle occurred. Toni realized the mistake too late and, having no time to start another recipe, he presented his gift to Lucia, almost ashamed of his mediocre work. Lucia, on the other hand, when she saw the apparently strange cake with a most enchanting aroma, immediately wanted to taste it and found it to be a heavenly delicacy. At that point, suddenly Toni managed to speak and immediately asked Lucia to marry him. They lived happily ever after and even became rich, because they decided to sell Toni’s invention by baptizing it Il Panettone, the Pan de Toni, Toni’s bread.

[The Italian version – Natale: la leggenda del panettone – appears at the end of this reading.] Our beloved panettone, sweet symbol of the Christmas season, has a rather amusing origin.
