I look at my hands and remember<\/p>\n
how she mounded the flour on the kitchen table
\nwith her peasant hands
\ncracked the eggs
\none by one
\nand counted
\n\u201cuna, due, tre, quattro,
\ncinque, sei, sette, otto\u201d<\/p>\n
filling the well she channeled down the middle
\nand gently beat the eggs to yellow
\nwith her hands<\/p>\n
how she kneaded the flour, yolks and whites
\nuntil they blended and shaped and formed
\na golden ball<\/p>\n
how she rubbed it smooth with olive oil
\nand rolled the ball across the table
\nand patted it flat with a wooden pole
\nso that it stretched and stretched
\nout from the golden ball
\ncovering the table
\nas if by magic to become
\na flour-dusted flat and yellow sheet
\nthat hung
\nbetween the chairs for drying
\nand cutting
\nwith a rippled metal wheel<\/p>\n
how the egg noodles lay to dry<\/p>\n
until she took them
\nand gathered them
\nin her strong, floured hands
\nto drop
\nand boil
\nin a chicken broth
\nto feed her ten<\/p>\n
